Storm Intercept Summary
Wow, I'm two for two in seeing tornadoes so far, on my first two storm chases this season. I went on this chase with a great group of guys, who all have the same passion for severe weather that I do. It turned out pretty interesting, as we came within 50 yards of actually driving through a weak tornado west of Amarillo, Texas. I'm just glad it was a weak tornado, and not one that may have caused a different outcome. I also learned during this particular storm chase, that XM WeatherWorx radar can only be so helpful. I, as a storm chaser, must still use my knowledge of storm structure and other storm reports, in order to not place myself in any danger. I contribute today's close call to putting too much emphasis on the radar images on my laptop computer, and not using old school techniques. Overall, this was a very successful storm chase, and one that I will never forget for the rest of my life.
