Storm Intercept Summary
Well, March ended with a big bang. I started by intercepting a tornado warned thunderstorm in extreme Eastern Labette County in Southeast Kansas. This storm had a lot of vertical motion with the scud clouds being sucked into the updraft of the thunderstorm. I did get to see a pretty good non-rotating wall cloud Northwest of Arma, Kansas, as I followed this storm to the Northeast. I did not see any tornadoes or funnel clouds from this storm, but it was a great start to my 2008 storm chase season.
I was originally going to target Eastern Oklahoma, as I knew that tornadoes would be more likely in that area this afternoon and evening. The storms during the morning hours that I mentioned above meant that I would have to hurry if I wanted to get to the tail end storms in Southeast Oklahoma. I did get to see a tornado warned supercell thunderstorm West of Hugo, Oklahoma. Hugo is located in extreme Southeast Oklahoma. I had to drive through a severe thunderstorm to get to this storm, and I experienced Penny sized hail. I did get to see some great storm structure and a wall cloud with this storm, but no tornado for my first chase of the new season.
